SEX MACHINE now shipping from Amazon

I got quite a few questions asking about why there was a 4-6 week delay to get Sex Machine from Amazon. Apparently, they were out of stock. But now you can order a copy and have it shipped overnight. I'll keep you up to date on other locations as they get their shipments in. Thanks for the continued interest and support!

On an unrelated note, while searching for details about Sex Machine on Amazon, I found another interesting title: Virgin Machine. Synopsis: A reporter who goes to San Francisco to write about romance has an affair with a stripper from an all-women's club.

SEX MACHINE in Fangoria

Sex Machine Fangoria Article
When my brother and I were kids, Fangoria was the holy grail. Unfortunately (and probably appropriately), it was frowned upon in our household. So on the rare occasions when we were able to get our hands on a copy, it was like gold. After fully reading it, we would usually sell it off to the juvenile delinquent who lived down the street. Fangoria is where I first read about J.R. Bookwalter who at the time was an 18-year old kid making a Super-8 zombie epic titled The Dead Next Door. In those days, it was not nearly as common for people to be running around making low-budget movies, and that article really opened my eyes to the possibility. This is all just to say, that I'm pretty excited that Sex Machine got featured in the latest issue. The issue is on the stands now - 28 Weeks Later is on the cover. SEX MACHINE opening credits

Here is the opening credits sequence of Sex Machine for your viewing pleasure. The compression at YouTube is really not doing us any favors, but I think this clip will give you a little sense of the feel of the movie.

It might seem strange that I am posting the opening credits of the movie. There is a little background to this decision. Recently, I've found myself in several discussions regarding movie title sequences and typography as it relates to movies. There are certain things that I absolutely hate and see over and over in low-budget movies. For Sex Machine, I really didn't want the titles to look "computer-y" and therefore they are all hand-drawn and lettered. Our budget for the sequence was basically zero.

So Leah drew and inked them on paper, then scanned them in and worked some magic in After Effects. The sequence is about as simple as it gets. While it's ultimately animated via computer, it's still hand-made.

For the live-action sequences between the credits frames, John Howell and I literally went to downtown OKC very late on a Sunday night and ran around the streets with a gun, a satchel full of fake money and a video camera. Shogo did some correction on the color so that the individual shots didn't keep switching from green to orange. But that's it. It was purely run and gun.

SEX MACHINE is out there

Sex Machine has been unleashed into the world. It's all up to you guys, now. You should be able to find it at the usual places, but if for some reason you don't see it on the shelf, ask somebody to order it. I have been getting reports that Borders and Best Buy are back-ordered. So, the more people we have asking about it - the better!

If you prefer to do all your shopping (or renting) via the internet here are a few places to snag a copy:

AnthemDVD
Amazon.com
Netflix

And in case you are still on the fence, here's what some critics had to say:

Film Threat:
This movie has all the makings of a rockin' B-action flick, and frequently "Sex Machine" rocks the house with its spastic "Natural Born Killers" like appearance. The wildly creative look and feel of the feature makes for an intense ride. But what's most remarkable here is the conscious, and successful, effort to slow things down and build the characters, to immerse you fully in the situation, to make you feel for this poor bastard Frank. These characters matter, you feel for their plight. This isn't just a bunch of people playing cops and robbers in front of a camera. This is action that counts!

Scars Magazine: Sex Machine is the way cult genre films should be: ballistic exploitation as an art form, carefully crafted and skillfully made. It might as well be called "artsploitation."

JoBlo.Com: 'Sex Machine' busies itself with all manner of nasty-cool. Strap-in, hang on, and prepare to have your teeth punched through the back of your head. Someone give this Christopher Sharpe fella some cash. We need another flick from him…pronto!

Creature Corner.com:
Sex Machine is a mishmash of a film, and I mean that in the best way possible. It's not really horror, it's not really action, it's not really comedy. But it takes elements of all of these things. It was made on the cheap (8,000 bucks!) and while it certainly doesn't look like it had a huge budget, it looks like it had a helluva lot more than it did. The soundtrack also helps, being one of the greatest I've listened to in a long time- of any film. It had me bopping my head, working perfectly for the style of movie it is- and it even made me wish for a cd soundtrack. Just great stuff.

SEX MACHINE available May 1st

It's been a long time coming, but SEX MACHINE will be released on DVD May 1st. I should have a full list of retail locations soon, but you can already pre-order it on Amazon and you should be able to add it to your Netflix queues soon.

The DVD features:
  • a commentary by Shogo and I, that will no doubt alienate and offend everybody.
  • a behind-the-scenes featurette about the making of the movie
  • photo galleries and artwork
  • and of course... the movie itself.

Making SEX MACHINE: Casting

This will be the first of a series of video clips about the making of Sex Machine. The documentary for the DVD had a 10-minute time limit, so there was a lot of stuff I had to cut out. So rest assured, you’ll still want to pick up the DVD for the good stuff. This clip focuses on the casting process and includes some never-before-seen audition footage. You’ll also get a quick glimpse of the “Fantom Kiler” which did not make the final cut of the movie. SPOILER WARNING: If you haven’t seen the movie yet, this clip gives away an important plot point. Enjoy…
